Shamir Backup

High Flexibility
The capsule features adjustable separators, offers more capacity – 123 instead of 96 characters most other solutions provide – and comes with a full ASCII-character-set supporting random passwords with numbers and symbols. All of the characters are deeply stamped into the tiles to provide maximum longevity.
This means that the capsule can securely store a random password without separators, an unabbreviated 12-word mnemonic seed, or the first four letters of a mnemonic seed made up of 25 word phrases.
1. The first example shows a random ASCII password stored on the core that is 55 characters long. Considering the unused space, two or more passwords can be stored, split using separators, up to 123 characters long, in total, including WIF, Hexadecimal, and Root Keys.
2. With the second, you can see an unabbreviated 12-word mnemonic seed. With the remaining space at the top, you can store additional data including passwords, passphrases, or random ASCII strings.
3. The third example demonstrates a 25-word abbreviated mnemonic seed. Of course, the aesthetically designed capsule is also able to store 20-word Shamir backups and 24-word recovery seeds in their abbreviated forms.
Standardised letter tiles vs hand-written solution
Our aim is to standardise the offline information protection system and provide a solution right out of the box. You don’t need to think or worry about buying additional materials or special tools. You don’t have to learn the hard way how painful engraving metal can be – no specific knowledge or safety equipment is needed. Simply open the pack and get started – everything you need is right there.
We use a classic, easy to read font that will be legible 10 or 1000 years from now. Hand engravings will naturally differ from person to person. Over time, you (or your heirs) may not be able to retrieve the information from a hand-written backup due to style, ambiguity, or decay. Using standardised tiles, you can change, undo, or redo the data you wish to be guarded. Should you make any errors, you can easily correct them.

Packaging
We designed a sturdy box which is reusable, transparent for easy searching, ergonomic for ease of use, and made from recycled PET. We have ensured the tiles stay separate during transport and storage and that they are easy to take out of their respective compartments.
There is no need to throw away the remaining character tiles because their numbers are partially random – nothing is revealed about the characters used or unused in the device. And as a consequence, the valuable data does not get compromised, and you have all the tiles you need should you decide to change your code.
Shamir Backup Support
The usual approach to protecting digital assets is redundant backups, but when the asset itself is of significant value and high liquidity, there is a substantial risk of a backup custodian absconding with the asset.
The cryptographic secret-sharing scheme created by Adi Shamir is an ingenious way to help protect data.
How Shamir’s secret sharing works?
Shamir’s secret-sharing provides a better mechanism for backing up secrets by distributing custodianship among a number of trusted parties in a manner that can prevent loss even if one or a few of those parties become compromised. The scheme allows you to split your recovery seed backup into multiple independent parts called shares.
You may shield important information using Shamir Backup, which is supported by the Capsule. The master secret that you are protecting might never be compromised even in cases of aggressive acts including but not limited to theft, bribery, vandalism and violence where the knowledge of fewer than the required number of shares is discovered.
Cryptosteel Capsules have been boxed together in different packs keeping in mind the Shamir Backup secret-sharing scheme as implemented by SatoshiLabs in the SLIP39 standard. The sets “TRIO” and “QUINTET” can be used to store a master seed using the 2-of-3 and 3-of-5 schemes respectively. Up to x-of-16.
Cryptosteel capsule solo review
![]()
Cryptosteel sent me their capsule solo for review. It’s a stainless steel backup for seed words or a master password. It is complementary to hardware wallets.
There is a steel tube with screw-on cap, and letters/numbers/characters on tiles in a hard plastic case. The cap has a skewer on which you can slide the tiles. It is like a kebab, but for steel Scrabble tiles. It is reusable and doesn’t require tools to assemble the tiles. This reduces the likelihood of injury and can be an additional expense. It doesn’t make any noise when assembling the tiles which is good for discretion. Certain steel backups require hammering or stamping onto steel, which is noisy.
Why a stainless steel backup device? It is necessary to backup seed words because any device that is holding them can fail. The backup allows you to retain the value (because as long as you have at least one copy, you haven’t lost any information). You can backup seed words by writing them onto a piece of paper. Ink on paper, however, is vulnerable to fire, water damage, tearing, and fading. Printing with a machine can mean the backup words are retained on the device (some printers and copiers keep an internal digital copy of printed documents).
Even if you do not use cryptocurrency, the capsule (or similar products) are a good way to backup a master password. Modern security practices suggest that you use a master password plus a password manager. A password manager can generate highly secure passwords for multiple accounts, but it creates a single point of failure — the master password. You must store the master password somewhere where it cannot be accessed by attackers, but will not be lost to the user. The capsule has enough flexibility due to the tiles that most master passwords can be stored on it. Note that the capsule does not have the capacity to store a long master password in addition to seed words.
According to the stress tests of Jameson Lopp, it is quite hard to destroy.
The only issue exposed by the tests is that the capsule would be hard to read if it was bent. Given the thickness of the steel, it is unlikely that the capsule would get bent in the way it was in the test. If it was (from an earthquake, for example), it could still be read but require tools or expertise.
The build quality is great and inspires confidence. This makes it feel like a serious tool for storing wealth instead of a toy. However, the tiles are small and can be hard to read. Assembling the tiles requires good eyesight and dexterity, which could be challenging for an elderly or disabled user. The end fastener is only non-reusable part (several are provided). The end fastener should be reusable (maybe a metal clip of some kind would work). For the example picture, I have loaded the following tiles: separator, “e”,”d”,”c”,”b”, and “a”. The tiles can be read without disassembly, but you must slide the tiles along to read each part. This is more time-consuming that if all were visible simultaneously, but reading seed words should not be an activity that you need to repeat very often.
There is a great poster with information security tips included. This should also be sold separately. Most people don’t understand information security very well.
I recommend placing the capsule in a tamper-evident bag so you know no one has accessed the data for subsequent theft. I suggested to Cryptosteel that they consider including tamper-evident bags, as they add value and individual bags are inexpensive (but typically are not sold individually). If it is possible to open the capsule in the tamper-evident bag, you can prevent this by placing tape over the capsule before placing it in the bag. Note the serial number on the bag so you can check that the bag has not been replaced.
I also recommend using a passphrase with your seed words. You can keep a small amount of bitcoin on your seed words with no passphrase and set an alert that will notify you if those bitcoin are ever spent. The real balance can be kept on one or more passphrases in conjunction with the same seed words. Thus, if your seed words are compromised, you can move the bulk of the funds (assuming the attacker steals the balance without the passphrase first). Your passphrase should be memorized or stored separately from the seed words.
You must balance the risk of unauthorized access to your keys against the risk of losing access to your keys. A well-thought out setup with quality hardware strikes a good balance between these two risks. Your hardware wallet can be protected by a PIN, secure element, and passphrase. Your steel backup is can be protected by a passphrase. The hardware wallet gives you convenient access and allows you spend safely. The steel backup ensures you do not lose access. More complex setups are possible (Multisig, Shamir’s secret sharing, etc), but the additional complexity can introduce additional risks for normal users.
Securing private keys isn’t easy, but fortunately people are working on making it easier. To securely use bitcoin now, you should at least have a hardware wallet and a steel backup. For hardware wallets, you can use the Coldcard, Trezor, or Cobo Vault (depending on security vs ease of spending tradeoff). For the steel backup, the Cryptosteel capsule solo is a good choice.
