How to Change a MetaMask Password

MetaMask is a cryptocurrency wallet app created for the Ethereum blockchain. You can access it via the MetaMask mobile app or web browser extension. Since you can set up different passwords for the mobile app and the browser extension, it’s easy to get them confused or forget one. That’s why you should know how to change your MetaMask password on both these devices.

In this article, we’ll show you how to change your password on the MetaMask mobile app and web browser extension on your PC. In addition, you’ll learn how to view your Secret Recovery Phrase on both devices.

How to Change Your Password in MetaMask

Every time you access your MetaMask wallet, you need to enter your password first. Keep in mind that MetaMask is a non-custodial cryptocurrency and token wallet. In other words, you are the sole custodian of your assets. Any data about your MetaMask wallet, like your password, username, or email address, won’t be stored in MetaMask’s database. Instead, all your data is displayed at a local level, either on the mobile app or the browser extension.

It’s easy to change your password on MetaMask when you know what it is. However, if you don’t remember your MetaMask password, you have to reset it. This is done using the Secret Recovery Phrase, which is basically a key to your MetaMask wallet. Your Secret Recovery Phrase is given to you when you first make your account, and you can’t change it. It can be 12, 15, 18, 21, or 24 words long. What’s more, you can’t access it without a password, creating a catch-22, so it’s important to write it down somewhere when creating your account.

How to Change Your Password in MetaMask on an iPhone

First, let’s see how you would change your password in MetaMask on your iPhone:

1. Open the MetaMask app on your iPhone.
   
2. Enter your current password.
   
3. Select the “Login” button.
   
4. Tap on the three horizontal lines in the upper-left corner of the screen.
   
5. Continue to the “Security & Privacy” tab.
   
   Note: This is where you can view your Secret Recovery Phrase.
6. Find “Change Password” on the list of options.
   
7. Type in the new password.
   
8. Confirm your new password.
   

That’s all there is to it. If you don’t see the “Change Password” option, then you have to reset your password with the Secret Recovery Phrase. This is the same solution you’ll need to use if you can’t remember your password. Here’s how it’s done on an iPhone:

1. Launch the app.
   
2. Tap on the three lines in the upper-left corner.
   
3. Go to “Log Out” at the bottom of the menu.
   
4. Select the “Import using Secret Recovery Phrase” option under the “Unlock” button.
5. Enter your Secret Recovery Phrase.
   
6. Type in your new password and confirm it.
   
7. Tap on the “Import” button.
   

Some iPhone versions allow you to log in to your MetaMask account via face ID. However, it’s still highly recommended that you use a traditional password.

How to Change Your Password in MetaMask on an Android Device

The process of changing and restoring your password in MetaMask on an Android device is similar. Follow the steps below to find out how it’s done:

1. Open the app on your Android device.
   
2. Type in your current password and tap on the “Unlock” button.
3. Go to the sidebar menu by tapping on the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner.
   
4. Proceed to “Security & Privacy.”
   
5. Locate and select the “Change Password” option.
   
6. Enter your new password.
   
7. Confirm your new password.
   

If you can’t remember your password or log in to your account at all, this is what you have to do:

1. Run MetaMask.
   
2. Tap on the “Import using Secret Recovery Phrase” option on the log-in page.
3. Type in your Secret Recovery Phrase in the first field.
   
4. Type in your new password.
   
5. Confirm your new password.
   
6. Select the “Import” button at the bottom.
   

You have to get the Secret Recovery Phrase right. If you try to restore your password with the wrong phrase, your current wallet, accounts, and assets will be removed from the app permanently.

How to Change Your Password in MetaMask on a PC

If you want to use the MetaMask browser extension, you can’t change the password there directly. However, you can reset it by importing your wallet from the mobile app using your Secret Recovery Phrase. When you do this on the mobile app, MetaMask gives you the option to sync your mobile app with the browser extension.

If you haven’t done this, or if you don’t use the mobile app at all, this is how you can reset your MetaMask password on your PC:

1. Open your web browser.
   
2. Click on the MetaMask extension icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.
   
3. Proceed to the “Import using Secret Recovery Phrase” option on the pop-up window.
   
4. Type in or paste your Secret Recovery Phrase” in the first box.
   
5. Choose a new password. It must be at least eight characters.
   
6. Confirm your new password.
   
7. Click on the “Import” button.
   

You’ve successfully changed your MetaMask password. This is why it’s important to write down your Secret Recovery Phrase somewhere when you first create your account.

When you go back to your home page on the browser extension, you’ll notice that you don’t have the option to change the password. You can only view your Secret Recovery Phrase. This is how it’s done:

1. Click on your profile picture in the upper-right corner.
   
2. Choose “Settings” from the drop-down menu.
   
3. Continue to “Security & Privacy” on the left sidebar.
   
4. Go to the “Reveal Secret Recovery Phrase” button.
   

Keep in mind that if you choose to sync your mobile app and browser extension, the password you selected for the mobile app won’t be valid anymore. Instead, the password you set up for the browser extension will be the only one you can use. If you haven’t synced these two MetaMask platforms, then you can use two passwords at the same time.

Additionally, if you can’t remember your MetaMask password or your Secret Recovery Phrase, you won’t be able to access your MetaMask account at all, let alone reset your password.

Secure Your MetaMask Passwords

While MetaMask doesn’t store any personal information, you’re at risk of losing all your accounts if you can’t access your wallet. If you forget your MetaMask password, there’s no need to worry. You can easily change or reset your password and quickly restore your account. However, if you forget your Secret Recovery Phrase, neither of these options will be possible, and you’ll lose all assets and have to create a new account.

I want to change my password on MetaMask.

I’m assuming it’s impossible to change your seed phrase, but can you change the MetaMask password? Originally I used 12 characters but would now prefer at least 20 characters.

I looked through the FAQ and Search Engines in general before posting my question.

@danfinlay Maybe it’s not bad to mention that when you reset your password you lose all your wallet on your metamask account . (that was the case, at least for me)

So be sure that your wallet is safe on a Paper!

Yes, you will lose wallets you’ve manually added. Caution with restoring form seed.

Is there a way to make it so the accounts you import with a private key are not «loose»? I had a couple accounts all associated with one metamask sign in, and when I migrated over to a new computer I had to manually import those accounts, which are now labeled «loose». Apparently any account that was created after the seed phrase was generated is «loose»; is there any way to bind those?

This is not the right place for questions about imported accounts, this is an old closed issue. Please don’t clutter our history!

(The loose label means it is imported. We will eventually display this differently, but there is no way to add an imported account to your seed phrase. The Loose label means that account is not backed up with your seed phrase).
