Chaos Cloud

  1. Smart Sync —
  2. Live View —

What is Chaos Cloud?

Chaos Cloud is a software as a service (SaaS) which allows you to submit and render scenes with cloud-based V-Ray. You can concentrate on designing and creating your scene, and Chaos Cloud will take care of installing and maintaining everything necessary to run V-Ray, without hogging your hardware and software. It is available for all 3D platforms compatible with V-Ray. Its interface is accessible by a web browser.

Rendering in Chaos Cloud is pretty simple and straightforward. All that is required is to have the Chaos Cloud Client application installed, after which you can access Chaos Cloud’s web-based interface and submit jobs to it directly from your host 3D software application. Once in the cloud, you are able to monitor the progress of your currently submitted jobs, queue up subsequent jobs, as well as change job settings and resubmit jobs without even opening a scene – right from your phone.

What is supported?

Chaos Cloud supports rendering still images and animations. If a Spherical Panorama camera is used in a still scene, Chaos Cloud automatically generates a responsive web page for reviewing the result on a VR headset such as Google Cardboard. Generating VR preview for the rest of the VR output cases is coming (e.g. Stereo, Cube6x1/Cubemap camera, etc).

You can render scenes using Progressive or Bucket render mode, depending on the scene setup in the 3D application. Note that when using the Bucket render mode, the Bucket size is automatically set depending on the hardware type used for rendering. This ensures the best cloud rendering performance based on the machines’ specifications and the performance tests we continuously run. If the Bucket size in the scene is different, it will be overridden.

At the moment, Chaos Cloud supports and renders scenes utilizing both the V-Ray CPU and V-Ray GPU engines.

The output image types you will be able to download by rendering in Chaos Cloud are JPG and the file type you have specified in your scene’s settings. These settings are customized in the 3D application you use for designing your scene. If you don’t specify anything in the 3D application, Chaos Cloud will generate an EXR image besides the JPG.

Chaos Cloud is available for all 3D applications supported by V-Ray via vrscene file export (e.g. V-Ray for Cinema 4D). Chaos Cloud also integrates directly with V-Ray for SketchUp, Rhino, Revit, 3ds Max, Modo, Blender, Houdini and Maya. The Chaos Cloud client app is available for Windows 64-bit, macOS 10.9 or later, and Linux 64-bit.

Scenes containing Phoenix FD simulations are rendered in the Cloud. However, running simulations in Chaos Cloud is not supported yet.

VRscan materials are supported in Chaos Cloud.

Submit and Download

To start a render job, submit a scene through the client app. If there are free resources in the cloud, Chaos Cloud will start rendering your job. If there are no free resources, your job will join a queue and will start rendering automatically when resources become available. By default our notification service sends you an email if your job status changes from one of the active states to one of the final states (“Completed” or “Failed”). You can unsubscribe from these notifications from the Chaos Cloud portal options. Chaos Cloud also has in-app notifications in Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

You can find your ready images in the Job Details page on the web portal, or you can download them with the corresponding command in the Chaos Cloud Command Line Interface (CLI): “ccloud job download –id –output”.

Supported 3D Applications

Simple and Fast Cloud Rendering with Chaos Cloud

Chaos’ cloud rendering platform, Chaos Cloud, lets users enjoy simple, fast, and smart rendering – without relying on local hardware configurations or virtual machines – all directly within V-Ray‘s UI.

So, What is Cloud Rendering?

When rendering projects from 3D applications, in most situations users will be utilising local hardware – meaning the CPU and GPU inside their computer do the work. Simply put, cloud rendering is when the rendering job is sent over the internet to a remote computer instead, to be processed there without using local hardware.

One of the main benefits of cloud rendering is that users don’t need to invest lots of money into powerful computers with expensive graphics cards and CPUs. Remote rendering computers, like the ones used by Chaos Cloud, are also vastly more powerful than a normal home or business computer. A typical user would have one render node to work on the job, but cloud rendering services often have thousands at their disposal to work on a job. This means that high quality renders can be completed considerably faster, and since the local hardware is not being used, the user’s computer is free to be used for other tasks – such as starting a new modelling project while the cloud render processes elsewhere!

Who is Cloud Rendering For?

Cloud rendering is ideal for any business or hobbyist that produces renders! Architects, interior designers, landscape designers, industrial designers, product designers, film production, set designers engineers, etc can all make the most of their projects with cloud rendering.

Remote Control
Adjust your job settings in the Chaos Cloud dashboard without having to resubmit your scene.

Smart Vault
Chaos Cloud stores your projects in the cloud, including assets, so you only need to upload them once.

Cost Control
Manage your upfront cost upon job submission of still images and download detailed reports on credit consumption.

Can I Try Chaos Cloud?

Yes – a free trial of V-Ray includes Chaos Cloud which you can find here. This includes 20 credits to get started.

What is a Credit, and How Many Do I Need?

Credits are spent when sending a job off to render on the cloud platform. How many credits are used depends on the complexity of the job. A 4K animation is going to use a lot more credits than a static HD image. It is important to note that credits can be used in fractions as well, meaning the 20 free credits could do much more than 20 jobs – depending on how they are used.

Take a look at some example scenes to decide how many credits is right for you. It is easy to add more credits to your account as well, whether you have run out, or just think you’ll need more.

Where Do I Buy Chaos Cloud?

Chaos Cloud is accessed through V-Ray which is available now at CAD Software Direct. Cloud credits can also be purchased to top up an account. If you’re undecided, why not try V-Ray free?
