I don’t think I’ve ever met a creator that hasn’t experienced the kafuffle of trying to withdraw their Polygon funds from OpenSea (OS).

A common issue experienced by creators is when they try to withdraw their funds to an exchange, it doesn't show up. But why would this happen?

When you are sending Polygon (MATIC) to an exchange, you must make sure you are sending it to an exchange that supports the correct network. This is where it goes wrong for so many people!

If you are on the Polygon network on your Metamask, your funds are going to be sent via the Polygon network. Many creators try to send their MATIC from Metamask to Coinbase, which only supports transactions on the Ethereum network. There are probably millions of $ worth of lost MATIC from people doing this exact thing!

So below is a step by step guide on how to get your funds to an exchange so that you can convert it to fiat and withdraw.

Step 1. Check your funds.

In order to send our funds to an exchange we now need to Swap it for MATIC.

2. Click on the ‘swap’ function. Select ‘polygon network’ and then we are exchanging ‘WETH’ in to ‘MATIC’.

3. Enter the amount you want to convert then click ‘Approve WETH’.

4. A Metamask popup will appear asking you to confirm the transaction. WETH has now been approved and we can go ahead and convert WETH to MATIC by clicking the ‘Exchange’ button. Approve the transaction again in Metamask and…

Congratulations you now have converted your funds to MATIC! Wohooo!

Step 4 — Sending your MATIC to an exchange

Now we need to send our MATIC to an exchange to turn it back to fiat. This is an important step. This is where most people go wrong.

Because we are on the Polygon network we must make sure that we are sending our funds to an exchange that supports this. Whatever you do DO NOT send this to Coinbase. You must use an exchange that allows transactions on the Polygon mainnet like Crypto.com or Binance US.

1. Locate the ‘deposit’ button in your exchange. Select ‘MATIC’ and ensure the network says ‘MATIC/ Polygon’.

Copy the wallet address — this is where you’re going to send your polygon to.

2. On Metamask click ‘send’, located just below your funds.

3. Enter the wallet address you copied from your exchange then confirm the asset and how much you want to send.

4. Click ‘next’ then approve the transaction. It may take up to 10 minutes for your funds to show in your exchange account.

Step 4 — Withdrawing your funds to fiat (£,$).

You now have your funds in your exchange account and you can trade your MATIC for fiat if your exchange allows you to do that directly. Or you may have to exchange MATIC for another cryptocurrency first like bitcoin or USDT before exchanging it for fiat.
